The origins of the AuthorAID concept were reported here, among other places.  Although AAEM has no permanent funding, support by Shiraz University of Medical Sciences made it possible for Karen to spend 6 months in Shiraz in 2009 and 9 months there from 2010 to 2011. During these two on-site phases of AAEM she worked with researchers and editors in Shiraz, Esfahan and Bandar Abbas, and in Doha, Qatar. Support from local organizers moreover made it possible for her to participate as a speaker and trainer in the EMMJ4 priming in Manama, Bahrain in 2008, the PACD-13 priming in Cairo, Egypt in 2009, the EMMJ5 priming in Karachi, Pakistan in 2010, and the EMMJ6 priming in Shiraz, Iran, in 2015. AAEM volunteer editors work with researchers via email to provide language editing or author’s editing at no forfeit to authors who are unable to pay. All editors are experienced in research manuscript editing, and many are currently professional editors or translators. Most manuscripts edited by AAEM so far have dealt with research in the health sciences, but the joint expertise of the volunteer editors covers several other areas of research such as public health and epidemiology, nursing, history of health sciences, biochemistry, molecular biology and psychology.  In 2010 AAEM became a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), an organization that advises editors, researchers and policymakers.Wareswell-nigh AAEM have appeared in European Science Editing, Middle East Journal of Cancer, Journal of the Tehran University Heart Center, The Write Stuff and the COPE newsletter Ethical Editing.
